The National population commission has called on all the stakeholders in the health sector to avail themselves of the data generated by the commission in the planning, execution and evaluation of health programmes for infants and children in the country.
The Chairman of the commission Alhaji Nasir Kwarra gave the advice at the National Dissemination and official presentation of the 2019 verbal and social autopsy study at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja and some states across the federation.
The verbal autopsy survey which is the second in the series, is a study that seeks to ascertain the causes and determinants of under 5 mortality in Nigeria between 2013 to 2018.
Alhaji Kwarra who stated that the importance of quality health care delivery on the economics, social and political development of the country can not be over emphasised, maintained that good health has great impact on the quality of the human resources.
The NPC chairman stated that with the range of issues covered in the 2019 survey, added that adequate and relevant data on the status of neonatal, infant and children in Nigeria.
Joining the zonal event via zoom in Ilorin, Kwara state, a federal commissioner of the Nigeria population commission, Alhaji Razaq Gidado, said the survey was targeted at providing health practitioners in the country an accurate data in order to be well guided on how to reduce neonatal mortality in the country.
Stressed that “today’s event was to disseminate results obtained from the study done in 2018 which was principally meant to establish data for development in the country and also improve health care service delivery especially in areas that has to do with new born babies”, Gidado said.
In his own remarks, kwara state commissioner of health, Dr. Raji Rasaq applauded the efforts of the National Population Commission (NPC) and all other organizations that supported the survey, in ensuring that accurate data are made available for the stakeholders in the health sector to be able to discharge their assignment appropriately.
He, added that the present administration in the state headed by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had impacted positively in the health sector, notably in areas of renovation of health centers and recruitment of qualified personnel.
Also contributing at the event was Comrade Lawal Aiyedun Oluwabunmi of March Health Care Initiative (MCI) who said two out of three Neonatal death is due to birth Asphyxia and four out of five newborn admission in University Teaching Hospital (UITH) is due to birth Asphysia.
In conclusion, the speakers at the event however, called on the government and the stakeholders in the health sector to stem the tide of increasing numbers of death in children.
