Abdulfatai Dankazeem, a leading figure in Yoruba radio broadcasting, has called for increased sports journalism in local languages, emphasizing that broadcasting in mother tongues can help uncover hidden talents.
He made this statement over the weekend at the Kwara State Close Table Tennis Championship in Ilorin, where he praised Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrazaq for inaugurating the new Table Tennis Arena for the tournament organized by a private entity.
“I commend Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrazaq for opening this excellent facility for the event. This initiative can attract other sporting events to Kwara, and it’s commendable that our governor is investing in sports,” Dankazeem said.
He also noted the inclusion of a co-presenter in Yoruba at the tournament, stating, “It’s important that not everything is conducted in English. We need more platforms for Yoruba sports broadcasting, blogs, and newspapers.”
Dankazeem highlighted the need to promote indigenous languages in sports to help those who feel excluded due to language barriers. “With more local broadcasts, we can encourage these talents.”
He expressed pride in the Yoruba broadcasters he has mentored who are excelling in sports broadcasting.
The championship was organized by SUIO Stainless & Steel, a sports promotion outfit, and De-Wise, an educational consulting firm, marking the first use of the newly constructed Table Tennis Arena by the state government.
