World Youth Skill Day 2020, Empowering Youth For Better Tomorrow – Kwara First Lady

The World Youth Skills Day is a United Nation (UN) designated day that seeks to empower youth, generate greater awareness, discussion on the importance of technical and vocational education, training and the development of other skills relevant to both local and global economies.

It is hoped that it will contribute to reducing unemployment and underemployment among the youth across the globe.

The aim of WYSD is to recognize the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship, and to highlight the crucial role of skilled youth in addressing current and future global challenges.

It is in view of this that the first lady of Kwara State Her Excellency Dr. Mrs. Olufolake Abdulrazaq and the Ajike People’s Support Center have taken skills acquisition of youths and women as one of their core concerns.

Consequent upon this the First Lady and Ajike People support centre have trained thousands of women in various skills together with the help of some support groups. In the last month alone about 40 youth were trained in tailoring with sewing machines to be presented to them when they graduate tomorrow, 16 July, 2020. Also today, the First Lady’s Office and the Ajike People Support Centre are in Offa to give out sewing machines, grinding machines and hair dryers to some entrepreneurial women identified by the Olofa of Offa to assist them.

In commemoration of the 2020 World Youth Skills Day, Dr Abdulrazaq implores our youth to explore this period to acquire new skills in Employment and Entrepreneurship which would put them in the right space for jobs or setting up businesses.

The Youth can also become youth leaders to assist government and mobilise action to address global challenges amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
