Court Sends Man to Jail Over Open Defecation in Kwara

One Mr. Mumini of Ogidi Area in Ilorin, kwara state capital has been sentenced to two month in prison or pay a fine of #20,000 for contravening the Public Health Law, cap 109, section 7, in Ilorin on Tuesday, 28th of September.

Operatives of the state, Ministry of Environment, in conjunction with Kwara state Environmental Protection Agency, (KWEPA) and Nigeria Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) arrested Mr Mumini for having an open sock away system with faeces all around his house thereby constituting a nuisance as well as veritable source of diseases.

According to the statement by the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Okanlawon Taiwo, said “Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Remilekun Banigbe in company of the Director of Environment, Mr Towoju Gabriel and the General Manager, KWEPA, Alhaji Dan musa Saad while inspecting the nuisance frowns at the practice of open defecation in the area despite the steps taken to curb such act in the state”

“As part of the offence committed by the defaulter, his premises which was earlier sealed by health officers was unsealed by the defaulter without court verdict to unseal, hence aggregates his offences.

“The defaulter was arrested by the NCSDC officers and without wasting time, arraigned in the state judiciary headquarters, Ilorin and sentenced to two month in prison or pay a fine of #20,000, making sure that the sock away is repaired within 24hrs ultimatum and report back to the ministry”

Witnessing the prosecution were: the Hon. Commissioner for Environment, Mrs Remilekun Banigbe,the Director of Environment, Mr Towoju Gabriel, General Manager, KWEPA, Alhaji Saad Danmusa, Deputy Director of Environment, Mrs Mary Mustapha, Health Officers and other management staff.
