The Young Progressives Party Kwara State chapter, has expressed disappointment over the decision of the state government headed by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq that led to the sacked of over 2,414 SUBEB Teachers employed by the immediate past administration, tagged “Sunset workers”

The party, called on Governor  AbdulRazaq to reverse that decision.  In a statement released by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Abdulrasaq Sulaiman Oyan, the Party submitted that sacking of over 2000 workers is not the solution to whatever challenges the state government claims they are facing.

“The party expressed disappointment in Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq who had earlier promised at the beginning of his administration not to disengage the 2019 SUBEB workers. The party observed that reneging of this pledge further confirms YPP’s earlier position that Governor AbdulRazaq words can never be taken to the bank and his promises should never be trusted”

“It is hypocritical for a government who claimed that SUBEB sunset workers were not qualified as class teachers to have appointed someone allegedly to be one of them as Commissioner of Education in the State and then lay off her colleagues. If the the SUBEB workers aren’t good enough to be teachers, then the Commissioner of Education appointed from their midst is worst enough to be heading the Ministry of Education. “He who come to equity must come with clean hands”.

“The YPP is particularly shocked at the hypocrisy of the governor and especially the Commissioner for Education who was initially employed as a SUBEB worker, until her perquisite “double promotion” to Commissionership. The silence of the Commissioner to fight for her “colleagues” demonstrates the hypocritical nature of the privileged who often times abandon other less privileged especially in their most dire times. This is not less unconscionable and ungodly”

“YPP believes that it is a wicked and illogical decision to throw out more than 2000 struggling young people back into the labour market at this critical time, insisting that there are better ways to handle the situation without having to make the workers go through these hardships”

The party further stressed that,  “it is unfortunate that the government of AbdulRazaq that has failed to provide tangible palliatives to the people during this hardship created by the coronavirus pandemic is rather compounding the high rate of unemployment and poverty in the State by unconscionably sacking over 2000 workers. A bad new year gift indeed”

“YPP maintains that it is a deceptive on the part of the government, making empty promises, yet again and creating false hope to have directed the people who were sacked because of what the government called “non-qualification” to reapply for the same job they claimed they were not qualified for in the first place. What a confused zigzagging administration!”

“It is an open secret that the disengagement of these workers were directed so that the vacant places can be filled by the governor’s political loyalists under the umbrella of AA Groups. This is politics played on the most inhuman and grotesque level and should be condemned by everyone”

“Let it be noted that the YPP will not shy away from standing against injustice, politics of discrimination and politicisation of good governance as every Kwaran, young and old, deserves and is entitled to fairness in job placement”

“The party insists that the SUBEB workers are bonafide indigenes of the State, therefore, it is callous for the government of AbdulRazaq to continue to refer to them as “liability” inherited from the previous administration, after all, the government continues to enjoy all the assets also inherited from the previous administration”

“The YPP therefore advised the Governor to first screen his appointees for competency and qualifications before he begins to rate the competencies and qualifications of the SUBEB workers. The governor is further advised not to throw hardship on these young people who are struggling to survive. The party posited that the SUBEB sunset workers should rather be screened and be selected for trainings, while also fixing others to places they can serve within the civil service instead of laying them off outrightly to create space for the employment of AA loyalists”

“YPP concludes by assuring the good people of Kwara, and especially the young, intelligent and patriotic Kwarans that it will do everything within it’s means to ensure that good governance is made the top priority, while working on full gear to put the interest of the people above anything else”
